Improving upon our best

Science

From star formation and nuclear energy to quarks and atoms in physics; from genetics to cells in biology and from protons and neutrons to smart materials in chemistry, science is the gateway to understanding the wonder and beauty in our world.

We believe that students deserve a broad and ambitious science curriculum, rich in skills and knowledge, which ignites curiosity and prepares them well for future learning or employment. Our science curriculum will give students an understanding of how the modern world works so they can make educated and informed decisions in their future lives.

Our science curriculum will give students the opportunity to do the following:

  • Develop practical skills by working scientifically

  • Articulate scientific concepts clearly and precisely;

  • Remedy misconceptions

  • Understand the nature, processes and methods of science

  • Understand the uses and implications of science today and for the future

  • Accurately use technical terminology in context

  • See connections between subject areas and become aware of the big ideas underpinning scientific knowledge and understanding

  • Use problem solving skills and numeracy within scientific concepts

*****

A successful KS3 student will have a well-rounded, basic knowledge of a range of scientific principles. They will be able to draw and interpret different types of graphs. They will be able to perform scientific calculations with the formula provided and use scientific terminology in the correct context. KS3 science students will be able to use basic laboratory equipment safely and collect data from practical work with reliable results. Students will be able to deduce conclusions from both collected and given data as well as form scientific arguments based on evidence.

A successful KS4 student will leave their studies with a well-rounded knowledge of a range of scientific principles and how to apply them to different situations. They will be able to draw and interpret different types of graphs and explain patterns using scientific terminology. They will be able to use and rearrange formula for many equations used in science, understanding the importance of accuracy and correct units. KS4 science students will be able to use complex laboratory equipment safely to conduct and design investigations to prove scientific principles. Students will be able to deduce conclusions from both collected and given data as well as compare, contrast and debate for and against different scientific theories and uses based on given evidence and knowledge.
