Citizenship

GCSE Citizenship is split into three units of study. In year 9 students study rights, the law and the justice system. In year 10 they study democracy and government and in year 11 they study British Identity and International Organisations. As well as this they also take part in Citizenship Action where they plan, carry out and evaluate some kind of change to benefit the community.

 

Year 9

Autumn Term – Students learn about different types of rights which we have – including human rights and workers rights. Students compare rights in the UK with rights in other countries.

Spring Term – Students evaluate how effective some UK Laws are. Students understand the differences between criminal law and civil law and also study miscarriages of justice. They debate whether they would change certain laws that we have in the UK. Students participate in a practise Citizenship Action, working in groups to plan, carry out and evaluate a campaign.

Summer Term – Students learn about the Justice System including the rights and responsibilities of the police. They also debate matters such as whether the police should be armed and investigate officers killed on duty. Students learn about the different courts in the UK and learn about the different types of cases which would be heard in Civil and Criminal Courts. Students learn about the role of Lawyers and Judges.

 

Year 10

Autumn Term – Students learn how taxes are raised and the different areas of public services where the money is spent. Students look at cuts made by the government and are encouraged to express their opinions about the welfare, education, health and pension system. Students then learn about the main political parties of the UK, how we vote and why a democracy is so important.

Spring Term – Students learn about the role of MPs, the Houses of Parliament and the advantages and disadvantages of having the House of Lords as part of the UK constitution. Students learn about the different responsibilities that senior politicians have as well as the traditions and ceremonial occasions of parliament including the role of the Monarch. Students learn about local councils and find out about their responsibilities. Students participate in Citizenship Action, working in groups to plan, carry out and evaluate a campaign.

Summer Term – Students learn about the role of the Media in a democracy and will form their own opinion on news stories which have been published due to public interest. They will debate whether these news stories are appropriate to report on or if they go against our right to privacy. Students learn about the BBC and how this media company is run differently to other media outlets. Students compare how Britain is run with other democratic countries such as Switzerland as well as dictatorships.

 

Year 11

Autumn Term – Students consider their own identity and their family traditions and customs. Students investigate why Britain is a multi-cultural country and the benefits and challenges that immigration brings. Students learn about Asylum Seekers and the rights and responsibilities that Asylum Seekers have in the UK. Students understand the importance of community cohesion and the work of charities such as the Princes Trust to improve opportunities for young people.

Spring Term – Students learn about the International Organisations that the UK is a member of such as NATO, The Commonwealth, The United Nations and the Council of Europe. Students learn about International Humanitarian Law and examples of when this has been broken. Students investigate previous conflicts that the UK Government has sent troops to and debate whether this was the correct decision.

Summer Term – Students use the revision booklet to revise the 3 year course.
